Dr Gerard Kilian

Dr. Gerard Kilian is a highly skilled orthopaedic surgeon, based in the picturesque region of Noosa. With over 25 years of specialised experience in the field, Dr. Kilian has established himself as a leading expert in hip, knee, and shoulder surgery.

Having graduated from the prestigious University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, Dr. Kilian completed his orthopaedic training at the renowned University of Cape Town in 1996. During his final year of training, he was awarded a local travelling fellowship, which he completed by presenting his research papers at the National Congress.

Dr. Kilian then relocated to Scotland with his family, where he worked for 15 years in the NHS, performing a high volume of joint replacements. He also worked at a regional treatment centre, reducing waiting lists, and specializing mainly in hip and knee replacements. During his tenure in Scotland, Dr. Kilian's passion for enhancing patient care and medical excellence led him to take on the roles of associate medical director and advisor to the Scottish government. He also played an active role in teaching as an honorary clinical lecturer at the University of Aberdeen and worked in the medico-legal field.

In 2011, Dr. Kilian migrated to Australia and settled in Rockhampton and Gladstone. He became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and worked as the acting director of orthopaedic services at Rockhampton, where he established the present telehealth service, which received a state award. He was also the clinical lead for the UQ rural medical school. Dr. Kilian continued to pursue an active interest in medical legal work and became a certified independent medical examiner.

Dr. Kilian is passionate about refining and optimizing surgical outcomes for his patients undergoing joint replacements. He is dedicated to improving their experience and helping them manage their expectations. Dr. Kilian also provides a trauma service at Noosa Hospital for appropriate patients, using innovative techniques such as tissue sparing anterior hip surgical approach, bone preservation surgery, and computer navigation technology to improve outcomes. He also employs the patient partner program for knee and hip replacement patients.

Dr. Kilian is committed to staying up-to-date with the latest surgical advancements and regularly travels to collaborate with and operate alongside leading surgeons. In addition to his specialization in hip, knee, and shoulder surgery, he also undertakes endoscopic carpal tunnel releases and minimally invasive bunion surgery, reflecting his commitment to providing comprehensive and holistic care to his patients.
